It’s almost 50 years since the Invergordon Aluminium Smelter was opened by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. A great deal has been written about the smelter over the years, but what many of our younger readers may not know, there was a great deal of debate about the location of a new smelter; whether it would be placed as far north as Invergordon and which company would build it.
Looking back through old editions of the Ross-shire Journal we came across a couple of articles which may be of interest.
These articles have been captured in the Alness & District Times June 2019 issue No. 324.
Read about the decision the Government finally made about the £70 million scheme, after Prime Minister Harold Wilson said an announcement would be given "very shortly".
There will be more about the opening of the smelter in next month’s ADT.
